Reflections- Architecture Design

What have I learnt?

- I improved on my skills in the area of Google Sketchup, and deepened my understanding towards it. Also, I learned more about 'poster making' applications such as InDesign, which will help me if I am required to design a poster or card in the future. Not only that, I also improved on my organisation skills as I had to organise my ADMT journal in a way that people can understand it properly, logical yet informative. I also obtained better planning and time management skills. The schedule was tight and I had to manage our time properly so that I can complete our tasks on time.

What are the difficulties encountered?

- There was a lack of time and it was difficult for me to manipulate Google Sketchup to do what I want. Hence, I had to rely on scurrying for tutorial videos so that I would be able to make some of the 'un-boxy' shapes in my design. The software was also quite slow and hence, editing of the design took up a lot of time and patience.

How did I overcome the difficulties?

- I modified my design accordingly so that it can show the features of the original product with the objects that can be designed in Google Sketchup with my level of skill. I also learnt and tried to organise my time so that I could complete the tasks on time, pushing away all procrastination and watching more tutorials diligently.

Links to the 10 Cs.

  • Creativity

Generation of ideas.

  • Commitment

Sacrificing time and effort so as to complete the ADMT tasks on time.

  • Critical Thinking
Thinking on how to modify my design so that I can successfully complete it in time with the constraints and my vague understanding of Google Sketchup. Also, I had to do extensive research before the design stage, which is to be recorded in the journal.

Journal Checklist

1) Research
i) Decided on the location and justify with reasons and evidence why the location is chosen.√
ii) Decided on the type of building to build, justify with reason and evidence why the type of building is chosen. Is there a need for it? Is there a trend among the target audience? Why is the target audience chosen?√
iii) Research on the type of building that you intend to build.√

Note: Evidence, Analysis, Conclude
(Evidence/Research information in the form of data, observations, images, newspaper cutting, etc.√
Analysis: making comparison, deduction, inference√
Conclusion: What can you conclude from the research information?)√

2) Idea Generation (fluency, quality, elaboration)
- the exterior design of the building
- the interior (explore the possible layout taking into consideration movement flow)
(Elaboration of ideas - within each idea, explain the thought process why the building was design in that particular way. What are the design considerations?)√

Note:
You would need to research on existing designs to help you with idea trigger. Make sure that you have commented/analyses the existing design and talk about what you would like to incorporate in your design. After which, you would then need to illustrate with sketches how the design look like. There could be more than one possible design.

3) Development of Idea

Work on the development of the selected idea going into the details of the selected design such as the choice of colors, texture, lighting, furniture, etc. Make sure that you have included the thinking process of why the choice is made. You would need to include images of your final design (done on google sketchup) and explain the thinkingbehind the design. Take note that there must be a unique feature in the design.

Design Evaluations

Raffles Courtyard

Unique

- Built in the tropical setting of an open courtyard, Raffles Courtyard, a timeless structure with white arches flanked by tropical palms and native plants, keeps the feeling of 'Old Singapore' alive. A colonial cocktail bar, a traditional alfresco kitchen, table umbrellas and lively music make the courtyard a pleasant place for patrons to watch the passing parade of visitors.

By highlighting a colonial design, the ambience suits the hotel- which houses tourists from all over the world. With Singapore’s history embedded in the design, tourists would have a good dining experience while appreciating Singapore’s unique culture. Palms and native plants bring about a sense of exoticness, beautifying the place naturally with Mother Nature.

The end product is an outdoors restaurant enhanced visually with nature and its unique colonial Singapore based theme.

Colours

- The lighting in the plants gives a greenish glow, used for calming us down. The white exterior symbolises innocence and hope and the black umbrellas, used in moderation, are a picture of peace. Such a colour theme is useful and appropriate for creating a relaxing, soothing holiday feel to the place, essential for tourists who are looking for an escape from real life in an exotic place. A warm hue is also created by the lights glowing on the wooden, brown floors, making the diners feel at home. The interior furniture is white/silver, symbolising peace.

Lighting

  • The lights used (floor lights, hidden in plants/creepers/ferns) brings out the glow of the plants and also exudes a ‘warm, welcoming’ aura, making the diners feel at ease.
  • In the day, natural lighting is used as it is outdoors, creating an airy, natural ambience.
  • At night, candle lights are used, placed on each table (metallic). The light would be reflected on the ‘shiny’ surface of the tables, resulting in a bright sheen. White lights are also given out by the surrounding buildings, and the place is not too brightly lit, perfect for a casual dinner out with a ‘retro’ experience (with a metallic sheen)

Texture

- The furniture is metallic, coated with white paint. This symbolises olden day Singapore, where such chairs are commonly used everywhere. The surroundings are concrete white, a little rough, creating an ‘olden days’ ambience without too much ‘high-technology’ materials such as glass, titanium etc.

Black Sheep Restaurant - Florida

Uniqueness

They have created a comfortable environment that offers a place to relax, meet up with friends and family, share news, and be entertained.

Color

The exterior is a contrast of red against black, which symbolizes and gives of feel of secrecy as well as warmth. The contrast intrigues the mind of the customers, and exudes a feel that completely fits in with their mission - to create a place to meet up with friends without worrying about eavesdropping, and relax in the warm ambience.

Lighting

The shape of the lighting is a sphere with many small bulbs along the thin pieces of metal as it curves into a sphere. The color of the light is orange-yellow, which exudes a welcoming and warm aura which would draw in customers.

Texture

The building is modern, with touches of traditional here and there in the restaurant, creating a good balance and contrast between the 2. The hard-back wooden chairs are black in color, while the plush seats are red. The colors fit in and add on to the ambience already created by the exterior, and the smooth interior further exudes and completes the feel of the restaurant. The bar, where drinks are served, is made from polished black wood, while the wine glasses are presented on the table top. This gives off a classy and high-class aura which would entice the upper-class people, who can afford to purchase the drinks sold at the bar. The entire restaurant oozes modern and high-class, and sticks to the purpose and mission of the company.

Sky Restaurant

This is a sky restaurant.

1. Illustrate with examples what would you see in the design of a building that you would consider it to be unique.

-Location: unconventional-SKY

WOW@Assumption Smashing

-The structure itself becomes an eye-seizing

-‘What’s that?! WOW’---->Never seen before, what is it? why is it there? Wow, it’s so unique!

-Value/meaning: Enjoyment value

-Meeting the requirements of the requirements

-Hanging in the sky makes people feel exhilarated and suit the targeted audience--in european countries who are relatively less conservative towards new and exciting experiences. e.g Turkey, England, Spain, US

-Their culture, personalities, i.e Explorers

*in this case, it MAKES the targeted audience want it (not necessarily needing it)

-It enhances the enjoyment level of DIFFERENT TARGETED AUDIENCES (age, hobbies, purposes of being at the palce), CULTURE of the countries, LOCATION chosen WITHIN THE COUNTRY, Ii.e ambience

e.g Holland-Golf Best-golf, greenery

seaside

London building

Wheels

-Application of Psychology: Chemistry when high up in the sky...

-Safety precaustions are implemented

-Other entertainments such as Piano...in the sky too.

-WOW factor

2. Illustrate with examples how does colors affect the look and feel of a building (exterior/interior)?

They vary according to different countries, locations within the country and the purpose of the event/

EXTERIOR

-No ‘outer coverings’ for the sky restaurant

-This feature brings out a feel of freedom and wildness, uniqueness

-Materials used: metal

-Color: gray

-in this case, since it’s a sky restraunt, the use of metal

-Another extraordinary factor: the ‘colorless’ feature enhances the value of the strucrture--WILDNESS and FREEDOM while the utensils and other things used in the sky restaurant are delicate as other ‘ground’ restaurants as well.

Correct? Always correct? Fixed?

INTERIOR

-white: cleanness

-glass: elegance

Lightings

~natural lighting

~At night: beautiful, colorful, becoming an attraction itself

~in the sky: a star? Wow

Types of lights available?

Texture

Forest Spiral – Hundertwasser Building (Darmstadt, Germany)

IN this building the colors look like wavesand make it look very soothing

The contrast of the colors is also very good and make it looks like waves. It gives it the very casual look which busy people like to see so that they can relax.

I am not abble to find out about the lights or texture

However from outside the texture looks smooth and nice which makes the color looks much nicer and smoother.

Design of a recreation centre (Guang Jun, Calvin, Kai Chek, Sue Lun)

Design of a recreation centre

Who are the user of the recreation centre? (Decide on the Target Audience.) What are the needs of the user? (Decide on the facilities needed at the recreation centre.)

  • Elderly

The elderly are usually free and do not have anything to do during the day. Hence, they the recreational centre would be able to serve as a place for them to spend time with their friends and relieve their boredom. Also, elderly friendly exercise corners would provide the elderly with places to exercise and stay healthy, an important factor in Singapore’s ageing society. The elderly would need ramps and supports to aid them when they are walking. Lifts and slip proof flooring should also be available.

  • Students

After a long day at school, they would be able to engage in sports with their friends. This group of people would want a sports corner/courts to be engaged actively in games as a form of enjoyment and de-stressing method. Fast food restaurants should be included as they would want a quick meal before/after engaging in physical activities.

  • Families

After spending time with their family, they would be able to sit down for a meal and catch up with each other. They would want a family-friendly restaurant which is casual but with decent food(not fast food). Gyms should also be included for parents to relax.

How do you think you can attract people to the recreation centre? What are the factors of considerations?

  • Diversity (All ages)
  • Aesthetics
Materials- Glass and wood coverings add in a touch of nature into the urban city.
Unique conical shape attracts people.

How would you make use of the space to build the recreation centre and why? (You need to consider the layout at different floors, inside and outside the building. Also consider the

movement flow of the user. )

  • Three stories-- 1st floor(Basketball courts, exercise corners), 2nd floor (Eateries, restaurants, badminton courts), 3rd floor (Gym with glass walls and scenery)

What makes a good architecture design?

A good building should satisfy the three principles of firmitas, utilitas, venustas, which translate roughly as –

  • Durability – it should stand up robustly and remain in good condition.
  • Utility – it should be useful and function well for the people using it
  • Beauty – it should delight people and raise their spirits.
Good architecture design is not all about coming up with an innovative, visually appealing building. Good designs have to be adapted to the environment, which should be used to bring out the uniqueness of the building. Besides that, it has to be able to serve its purpose and be adaptable to the seasons if required. Also, the design should not strike out the environment it is in but enhance it, giving it a new dimension made possible only by a good architecture design. Of course, the design has to be sustainable and sturdy to provide safety- of upmost importance, to the users. A design that encompasses all these is then, a truly good architecture design.

Evaluation of buildings
- Great Pyramids of Giza

Openness to different user groups and functions

It is used as a tomb and a tourist site. It served it's use of protecting the Pharaohs' corpses by being sturdy as it is still standing after many centuries.

Adaptability to new conditions/situations

Few changes are allowed as moving the massive stones will take a huge amount of labour.

Physical basis for other functions

Maze of corridors inside which helps to prevent easy accessibility to the 'sacred' pharaoh's corpse.

Site Design

Edges and enclosure

Surrounded by sand, located in a desert.

Landmark character

It was the tallest man made building for 3800 years and is a public landmark.

Detailed design and materials

Materials and their use

Use of huge stones makes it sturdy and sustainable and it is still standing after thousands of years.

Colour

It's original coating of white a gold stands out in the brown sands surrounding it.

Aesthetics

- Magnificent with it's original gold white covering. With it's simple design on the outside, it is a timeless, visually appealing building.

Conclusion

Located in a barren place, ideal for a royal tomb, and it is a good architecture design as it is sustainable enough to save it's purpose of protecting the pharaoh's corpse. The maze like passageways also prevents burglars from stealing the valuables kept inside.

What is architecture design?

Architecture design refers to the actual design and layout of spaces. Architecture encompasses many different elements including construction, design, and the manipulation of light as it relates to shadow. Throughout history, architects have found ways to create functional and practical spaces using any materials that were available.

To me, architecture design is about designing with a goal of fulfilling the needs of the audience. The design should complement its' surroundings and beautify it by adding factors that enhance the unique features of the environment.

Through design, we can change lives and motivate others by giving them an ‘ideal’ place that gives them what they need. For example, by creating a soothing environment in hospitals via architecture design, the patients will have a better resting area. With uplifted spirits, they will definitely be able to heal at a faster rate.
